The Art and Science of Natural Dyes by Joy Boutrup and Catharine Ellis is now #1 on my list of best natural dye books! The content is clear, thorough and backed by the knowledge and experience of its authors: one a textile engineer, the other a studio practice textile artist.
This book seeks to, and often does, answer many of the WHY questions of natural dyeing that are often otherwise unexplored when practices are suggested by wrote. The tone is precise and the breadth of information discussed is VAST. This book can be read as an exploration of a branch of physical chemistry or as a wonderful cooking manual full of recipes to help make your colored dreams real. I cannot recommend this enough as both an introduction and constant companion for the natural dyer.
