Natural Dye Work-Study Group
This is an open meeting for people interested in Natural Dye. The purpose is to share information, dispel myths, establish a constructive conversation and dye practices to be able to gather information and solve problems relevant to contemporary, small-scale dye practices.
Each meeting will have a presentation by a speaker or two which will last for about 10-15 minutes. The remainder of the time is meant for dyers to share their own work and inquire of each other. The hope of these gatherings is to connect a community that is willing to work together to collectively create and share (ideally in some yet-to-be-created online forum, edit : forum has been created, please get in touch about joining) solutions to pertinent natural dye questions.
Next MEETING : Wednesday May 2, 2018. 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
604 N. Occidental Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90026
ACTIVITY : Dye an item in the Buaisou Sukumo vat!
The team from Buaisou was just in California for an indigo dyeing workshop series. They created an indigo vat in the traditional Japanese sukumo style using only fermented indigo, wheat bran, shell lime and wood ash water. I was able to purchase their vat after their final workshops in Los Angeles and have been tending to it (keeping it warm, stirring daily, etc).
I wanted to extend the opportunity to dip an item or two to the members of the natural dye study group so you can get a feel for dyeing in this style vat. It is incredibly beautiful to see/smell/feel the indigo come alive in this organic way! If you'd like to dip anything, please just plan to chip in $20 to cover the cost of the vat.
Please sign up below if you're interested in attending or would like to contribute to the group in the future.
If anyone has been doing research or experiments in a particular subject and would like to give a short slideshow, it should be dark enough by 8-9 to set up the projector and give a little presentation. Please let me know if you have anything to share!
Feel free to BYOB and snacks to share, the evening will be very informal!
