It blooms once, then expires

I've been totally intrigued by California native plants since moving to Los Angeles a year ago. One of the total wonders here is the Century Plant : Agave Americana. It blooms once at the end of its life cycle then sends out growth from it's root structure after its bloom has dried and leaves withered. When in the process of blooming, it sends up a single shoot, like a giant tip of asparagus that unfurls into clouds of yellow cupped blooms pointing upward, 30 feet up in the sky. I was recently commissioned by the band Blisses B to design their album art and pitched them the concept of using an illustration of the plant for their CD cover, and they went for it! Here are some shots of the design as well as some of the plants growing in my neighborhood.
